The Chief Minister of India's State of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, has declared Monday, August 8, 2011, as a one-off state public holiday on account of the 150th death anniversary of poet Rabindranath Tagore.

State Chief Minister Banerjee also appealed to the central government to declare a national public holiday to mark the occasion, and said she would write to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accordingly.

Rabindranath Tagore was the first Asian Nobel laureate and the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for literature, and he wrote the national anthems of two countries; India and Bangladesh.
