The second Tuesday of February every year has been confirmed as the new Qatari National Sports Day public holiday by the Gulf Times which had published reports to the contrary in its edition of yesterday.

According to a story which appeared in yesterday's edition of the Gulf Times (2012-01-17), the Qatari Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari, was quoted as saying that "Qatar will make February 18 every year the National Day of Sports" and attributing the quote to the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.

This was in contradiction with last month's (2011-12-07) Emiri Decision No.80 of 2011 which declared the second Tuesday of February, every year beginning in 2012, as National Sports Day which will be an official paid holiday, in accordance with the Qatari Labour Law No.14 of 2004, which took effect on January 6, 2005, and as amended by the Law No.8 of 2009 (2009-09-03).
