The Tongan Cabinet has declared Wednesday, July 4, 2012, and Thursday, July 12, 2012, as additional, one-off, non-working public holidays throughout Tonga.
Thursday, July 12, 2012, will be a non-working public holiday for the Royal Wedding of His Royal Highness, The Crown Prince Tupouto'a ‘Ulukalala and the Honourable Sinaitakala Tu'imatamoana ‘i Fanakavakilangi Fakafanua.
Wednesday, July 4, 2012, will be a non-working public holiday for the Official Birthday of the Reigning Sovereign of Tonga, His Majesty King Tupou VI. In the past (2010-05-19), when King Tupou VI was the Crown Prince, the public holiday for his birthday was marked on July 12. But, following the death of King Tupou V (2012-03-23) and this year's Royal Wedding, the date of the observance of the Official Birthday of the Reigning Sovereign of Tonga was changed.
Despite an amendment to the Tongan public holidays rules a few years ago (2010-05-19), the Prime Minister's Office statement was clear that "The public holidays will be observed on the days that they fall on, that is Wednesday 4 July 2012 and Thursday 12 July 2012".
