The President of the Republic of Liberia, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, has issued a Proclamation declaring Friday, October 11, 2013, as the first occurrence of the new "International Day of The Girl Child" working public holiday.
As per the aforementioned decree, the declaration of a new "International Day of The Girl Child" working public holiday on October 11 is "in consonance" with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 66/170 (December 19, 2011) which declares October 11 of each year as the "International Day of The Girl Child".
The declaration of one-off non-working public holidays in Liberia is relatively common (2012-06-20, 2012-05-02, 2012-04-23, 2012-01-13, 2011-08-09, 2011-01-28, 2009-11-23 and 2009-11-09), but as far as we can remember this is only the second time that a decree is issued to declare a working public holiday, the previous occasion being when a proclamation was issued from the Executive Mansion declaring Friday, June 22, 2012, as a one-off working public holiday to coincide with the date of this year's African Public Service Day (2012-06-20).
