The Fiji Governing Cabinet has approved, through Gazette Notice No. 68, dated yesterday, its annual list of the dates of official non-working public holidays in Fiji for the upcoming calendar year 2016.
For the fourth consecutive year (2014-05-20, 2013-06-20 and 2012-08-01), and after years of talks on the matter (2002-01-06), the Queen's Birthday annual public holiday remains absent from the aforementioned 2016 list of official public holiday in Fiji. That reduction in the number of Fiji's official public holidays followed the 2010 cancellation of the National Youth Day and Ratu Sukuna Day public holidays (2010-03-21 and 2010-05-24) which itself followed the 2003 cancellation of the Fiji public holiday for Prince Charles' Birthday (2003-06-11).
The aforementioned list of the dates of official non-working public holidays in Fiji for the upcoming calendar year 2016, lists an incorrect date as the Fiji annual non-working public holiday for Prophet Mohammed's birthday in 2016.
The aforementioned non-working public holidays in Fiji for the upcoming calendar year 2016 also confirms the 2 new annual Fiji public holidays announced since last year's announcement of the official list of non-working public holidays in Fiji for the present calendar year (2014-05-20), namely National Sports Day (2015-06-21) and Constitution Day (2015-08-27).
