Puerto Rico January 12 Public Holiday Status

The public sector's human resources department of the government of Puerto Rico (ORHELA) has reminded the population that, as per last summer's amendments to the law regulating public holidays in Puerto Rico, the initially-announced annual non-working public holiday of January 12, 2015, in Puerto Rico, was no longer a non-working public holiday.

Last spring (2014-03-29), the public sector's human resources department of the government of Puerto Rico (ORHELA) had released its annual "Memorando Especial", which listed Puerto Rico's public sector holidays for the upcoming calendar year 2015.

However, since then (2014-07-29), the Governor of Puerto Rico, Alejandro García Padilla, signed into law the "Proyecto del Senado 1113", which reduces the number of annual non-working public sector holidays in Puerto Rico, by lumping 4 of the current annual non-working public sector holidays of Puerto Rico into one, the "Día de los Próceres Puertorriqueños".

ORHELA then released an amended version of its annual "Memorando Especial", which lists Puerto Rico's public sector holidays for the upcoming calendar year 2015, based on last summer's amendments to the law regulating public holidays in Puerto Rico (2014-10-26).

Despite the aforementioned reduction in the number of public sector holidays in Puerto Rico, as always (2013-09-14, 2012-06-19, 2011-07-26, 2010-04-05, and 2009-08-10), the private sector benefits from fewer public holidays than the public sector. Banks usually follow the public sector holidays, except in cases when these fall on a Sunday.
