The government of Suriname, through its Minister of the Interior, Mohamed Noersalim, has issued an official statement stating that Javanese New Year (Javaans Nieuwjaar - Sasi Sura), on Friday, November 13, 2015, had not, and would not, be declared a non-working public holiday in Suriname.
The aforementioned announcement by the Minister of the Interior of Suriname, that Javanese New Year, on Friday, November 13, 2015, would not be a non-working public holiday in Suriname, was brought on by persistent rumours over Suriname's social media, as last year (2014-11-17), the Suriname Raad van Ministers (Council of Ministers) had declared Monday, November 24, 2014, as a one-off non-working public holiday throughout Suriname, to commemorate Javanese New Year (Javaans Nieuwjaar - Sasi Sura).
The list of expected Suriname public holidays dates for the calendar year 2015, released and amended at the beginning of this year (2014-02-12 and 2014-03-17), listed Wednesday, November 11, 2015, as the expected date for the Divali public holiday in Suriname for the calendar year 2015, but did not include Javanese New Year, as a non-working public holiday in Suriname in 2015.
