The government of Honduras, through its Secretaría de Estado en los Despachos de Derechos Humanos, Justicia, Gobernación y Descentralización, has announced Friday, September 16, 2016, would be a one-off non-working public sector holiday for Honduras' public sector, to link the annual Independence Day public holiday with the following weekend.

As per the aforementioned announcement, the declaration of Friday, September 16, 2016, as a one-off non-working public sector holiday for Honduras' public sector, to link the annual Independence Day public holiday with the following weekend, was made to promote family ties as well as national (internal) tourism ("concedió a todos los funcionarios y empleados públicos un asueto para el día viernes 16 de septiembre a cuenta de vacaciones para promover las tradiciones, unidad familiar y el turismo interno").

Three years ago (2013-09-14), the government of Honduras, through its Secretaría de Interior y Población, had declared Monday, September 16, 2013, as a one-off non-working public sector holiday for Honduras' public sector, to compensate the annual Independence Day public holiday falling on a Sunday, and two years before that (2011-09-14), Honduras' Secretary of State of the Interior (Secretario de Estado en los Despachos del Interior y Población), Áfrico Madrid, had ruled-out the declaration of an additional non-working bridge public holiday on Friday, September 16, 2011.
