Honduras' Presidency has once again issued an executive decree making the afternoon of Wednesday, February 3, 2016, a one-off public sector holiday, on the occasion of the "Day of the Virgin of Suyapa", the patron saint of Honduras.
As such, the public sector will stop working at noon, local time, on Wednesday, February 3, 2016, as was the case on previous occasions (2015-02-01 and 2010-02-02).
As was the case on similar occasions, the official text of the decree limits this public holiday to the public sector ("se concede asueto del día miércoles 3 de febrero del año en curso a partir de las 12:00 del mediodía, a todos los funcionarios, empleados de la administración pública, centralizada, descentralizada y desconcentrada del Estado").
February 3 almost became an annual full-day, nationwide, non-working public holidays in Honduras, a few years ago (2012-03-08), when Honduras' Legislative Assembly (Congreso Nacional) indicated that it would approve a presidential request that February 3 be declared a new annual non-working public holiday in Honduras to coincide with the Aniversario del Hallazgo de la Virgen de Suyapa, but by the time it was gazetted, the February 3 public holiday of Honduras had been reduced in scope to a mere observance (2013-01-25 and 2012-10-14).
