Early Tuesday morning, local Hong Kong time, a level 8 cyclone warning was raised in Hong Kong, in expectation of cyclone Nida's passage later in the day, and the government of Hong Kong declared Tuesday, August 2, 2016, as a non-working public holiday in Hong Kong, as well as a bank holiday in Hong Kong, with closed government offices and schools for the day.
The Hong Kong Stock Exchange also suspended trading, and the Hong Kong Association of Banks announced that all banks in the Hong Kong will be closed for the day, as happened a few years ago in similar circumstances (2008-08-06).
The aforementioned declaration of Tuesday, August 2, 2016, as a non-working public holiday in Hong Kong, as well as a bank holiday throughout Hong Kong, thus amends the annual official list of 2016 calendar year public holidays to be observed in Hong Kong, issued last spring (2016-05-01), in accordance with the Employment Ordinance and General Holidays Ordinance as well as amendments thereto.
