Romanian President, Klaus Johannis, has signed into law, the law declaring June 1st, Children's Day, as another new annual non-working public holiday in Romania for both the private and public sectors, which had earlier been approved by the Romanian Senate and the Romanian Chamber of Deputies.
Earlier this year (08-Apr-2016), the aforementioned legislative proposal to amend Article 139 of Law No. 53/2003, the Romanian Labour Code, with the aim of declaring June 1, Children's Day as a new annual non-working public holiday in Romania, was introduced in Romania's upper house of parliament (Senate), and with support from the Romanian Government (13-Jun-2016), the amendments were finally passed by the Romanian Senate, in the late summer (15-Sep-2016) and then in the Romanian Chamber of Deputies (18-Oct-2016).
At the time, we had been cautious about the chances of Children's Day being signed into law as a new annual non-working public holiday in Romania by the Romanian President, as, earlier last month (07-Oct-2016), Romanian President, Klaus Johannis, signed into law another recently-voted Romanian public holidays bill, this one declaring January 24 as a new annual non-working public holiday in Romania, for both the public and private sectors, to commemorate the reunification of Wallachia and Moldavia (06-Sep-2016, 18-Dec-2014, 03-Dec-2014, 08-Sep-2014, 24-Apr-2014, 17-Apr-2014, 13-Jan-2011, and 20-Jan-2009).
Prior to the signing into law of January 24 and June 1 as a new annual non-working public holidays in Romania, the last time a new non-working public holiday was declared in Romania being 4 years ago (27-Jun-2012 and 22-May-2012), when Saint Andrew was declared as a new annual, November 30, non-working public holiday in Romania.
Neighboring Moldova also declared June 1st as a new annual non-working public holiday, effective in 2017, last spring (30-May-2016 and 27-May-2016).
