The government of Suriname has announced that Friday, July 1st, 2016, and Wednesday, July 6, 2016, would be non-working public holidays in Suriname on account of the annual "Dag der Vrijheden" (Emancipation Day), and "Ied-Ul-Fitre" (End of Ramadan), public holidays in Suriname, for the calendar year 2016.
Three years ago (2013-06-26), the Suriname Raad van Ministers (Council of Ministers) has announced that Monday, July 1st, 2013, would be a one-off non-working public holiday throughout Suriname to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the emancipation of slaves ("150 jaar Afschaffing van de Slavernij"). The July 1st non-working public holiday in Suriname was then maintained in the subsequent announcements of non-working public holidays in Suriname for the years 2014 and 2015 (2015-01-26, 2014-03-17, 2014-02-12 and 2014-01-15).
July 6, 2016, had been announced as the date of the upcoming "Ied-Ul-Fitr" (End of Ramadan) annual non-working public holiday in Suriname, last month (2016-06-13).
