Maldives President, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, has declared Sunday, September 23, 2018, as a one-off non-working public holiday in the Maldives, on account of the Presidential Elections 2018.
The Maldives Elections Commission had said that they would try to make the day a public holiday, when earlier this week (2018-08-10), the Supreme Court of the Maldives threw out a case filed by a former Attorney General of the Maldives, Husnu Al Suood, petitioning the court to declare the day of the upcoming Presidential Election, September 23, 2018, as a one-off non-working public holiday in the Maldives since, in the past, elections in the Maldives were held on a weekend, a claim that is not actually borne out by facts (2017-05-06, 2013-11-16, 2013-09-05, 2009-04-30, 2008-10-15, 2008-10-12, 2008-10-02, 2008-09-17).
