The Suriname Raad van Ministers (Council of Ministers) has announced that it had decided to declare Tuesday, June 5, 2018, as a one-off non-working public holiday throughout Suriname to commemorate the 145th anniversary of the arrival of indentured "Hindustani" workers.

Five years ago (2013-06-02), the Suriname Council of Ministers had similarly declared Wednesday, June 5, 2013, as a one-off non-working public holiday throughout Suriname to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the arrival of indentured "Hindustani" workers, and 5 years before that, a one-off public holiday was declared in Suriname for the 155th anniversary of the arrival of Chinese indentured workers (2008-09-19).
