The Kuwaiti National Assembly’s legal and legislative committee has approved a draft law to declare Ashura as a new annual non-working public holiday in Kuwait, for both the private and public sectors.
If the aforementioned draft law to declare Ashura as a new annual non-working public holiday in Kuwait, came to pass, it would further amend (2017-07-16), the Kuwaiti Private Sector Labor Law, which in turn had amended the labour law gazetted 9 years ago (2010-02-22, 2009-12-25, 2009-02-18 and 2009-02-03), the "State of Kuwait New Private Sector Labour Law No.6 Of 2010", which had then increased the number of public holidays for the private sector from eight, currently, to thirteen, including three days for Eid Al-Fitr, three days for Eid Al-Adha, as well as the February 26, Liberation Day, public holiday, a public sector only holiday beforehand.
It must be noted, however, that, in the past, such proposals have been rejected by the Kuwaiti government in fine.
