The Romanian Government, upon the proposal of the Ministry of Labor and Social Justice, and as expected, has agreed to declare Friday, August 16, 2019, as a one-off non-working public sector holiday, throughout Romania, to link the August 15, feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, public holiday of Romania, with the following weekend.
Recall that, late last month (2019-07-30), we had reported that the Romanian Government was considering declaring Friday, August 16, 2019, as a one-off non-working public sector holiday to link the August 15 public holiday with the following weekend.
The declaration of Friday, August 16, 2019, as per the H.G. nr.557/2019, as a one-off bridge public holiday in Romania, thus amend the lists of public holidays for 2019 in Romania (2019-01-04), once again (2019-03-29 and 2018-02-25), though only for the Romanian public sector.
Such one-off bride public sector holidays have been a staple of the Romanian labor calendar (2018-12-18, 2018-08-02, 2018-04-12, 2018-03-12, 2018-02-28 and 2018-02-25), usually announced in extremis. However, a recent law ("Law no. 156/2019 for the completion of art. 139 of Law no. 53/2003 regarding the Labor Code"), beginning in 2020, will force the Romanian government to announce by January 15th, at the latest, any and all one-off public holidays it intends to declare for the year (2019-07-25).
