Antigua and Barbuda Cancels December 26 Public Holiday

The Office of the Labour Commissioner of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda has issued the general notice "Observance of Boxing Day 2020" which states that, as per the Statutory Instrument 2020-82, Saturday, December 26, 2020, will not be a public holiday in Antigua and Barbuda.

Today's For Immediate Release notice follows last week's announcement (2020-12-18) by the Government Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda, that it would ask the Governor General to declare Monday, December 28, 2020, as a public holiday in Antigua and Barbuda ("because December 26, Boxing Day, will fall on a Saturday this year"), which was to amend the list of 2020 public holidays as released by the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Legal Affairs of Antigua and Barbuda, earlier this year (2020-01-15).

As per Cabinet Spokesperson, Melford Nicholas, that special request to declare Monday, December 28, 2020, as a public holiday in Antigua and Barbuda, was necessary as "the law only addresses what happens when Boxing Day falls on Sunday but is silent regarding what happens when it falls on Saturday".

The public holidays legislation of Antigua and Barbuda, on which the list of 2020 public holidays was based, states that "If the first day of January falls on a Sunday, then the following Monday shall be a public holiday" and that "If Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, then the following Monday shall be a public holiday. If Christmas Day falls on a Sunday, then the following Monday and Tuesday shall be public holidays".
