The President of the Gambia, Adama Barrow, has declared a public holiday in the Gambia on Saturday, August 29, 2020, on account of the upcoming Yawmul Ashura.

Today's announcement ("His Excellency, Adama Barrow, President of the Republic of The Gambia acting under the provisions of section 76 (1) of the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia declares Saturday, 29th August 2020 as a public Holiday throughout The Gambia in observance of the Muslim New Year, also known as Yawmul Ashura."), is not in line with the recent trend by Gambia's President, Adama Barrow, of extending the annual public holidays of the Gambia by a second day (2020-07-29, 2020-05-22, 2019-06-03, 2018-12-24, 2017-06-22, 2018-08-20, 2016-09-09) and, of course, incorrectly states that Yawmul Ashura corresponds to the Muslim New Year.
