The Government of Gibraltar has issued the communique 831/2020 which announces that Gibraltar will mark Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with an extra bank holiday ("In 2022, the May Bank Holiday will be moved to Thursday 2 June, with an additional bank holiday on Friday 3 June to mark Her Majesty's 70th year as monarch.").
Today's announcement follows the recent announcement (2020-11-12) by the UK's culture secretary, Oliver Dowden, that an extra Platinum Jubilee public holiday would be declared on Friday, June 3, 2022, to mark Queen Elizabeth's 70th anniversary on the throne, which, combined with a shift of the 2022 spring bank holiday to Thursday, June 2, 2022, will create a 4-day period of bank holidays.
As per Gibraltar's Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, "This is the first time that any British Monarch will reach this historic milestone, and it is right that we mark the occasion in this way.".
Recall that, ten years ago (2011-10-19), on the occasion of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the Government of Gibraltar had moved the Spring Bank Holiday to Monday, June 4, 2012, and declared a one-off public holiday on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, as per the terms of the "Bank and Public Holidays (No.2) Order 2011" (LN. 2011/189).
