The Nepalese Muslim Community has announced that the Moon of Shawwal had not been sighted in Kathmandu, nor in any part of the country, and therefore that the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr (End of Ramadan) public holiday would be observed on Monday, May 25, 2020.

Recal that, earlier this week (2020-05-22), the Government of Nepal decided to grant a non-working public holiday in Nepal, on the occasion of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr (End of Ramadan), but, as per Nepalese Government Spokesperson, Yubaraj Khatiwada, the date that public holiday had not yet been set.

For a few hours, an announcement by the Nepalese government circulated, setting the date the aforementioned Eid-ul-Fitr (End of Ramadan) public holiday as Sunday, May 24, 2020. But this was promptly corrected.

Muslim public holidays were added to the official list of Nepalese public holidays for 2008 (2008-10-01), after years of protests by the Muslim minority in Nepal (2007-06-30), and maintained since (2019-05-30, 2018-06-14, 2017-11-30, 2017-08-31, 2016-09-10, 2016-07-06, 2015-09-24, 2015-07-17, 2014-07-28, 2013-08-08, 2012-08-17, 2010-09-09 and 2009-09-20).
