The Government of Canada's Province of British Columbia has updated its official multi-year list of public holidays in British Columbia by announcing the non-working public holidays in BC for the calendar year 2022.
The aforementioned list of 2022 public holidays in British Columbia lists the Family Day public holiday on the third Monday of February, as it has for the past 2 years (2019-06-03 and 2018-05-11).
Monday, February 18, 2013, had been scheduled to be the first occurrence of the Family Day BC public holiday (2011-10-05), based on a promise by Christy Clark, earlier that year, when she was running for the leadership of the BC Liberal Party (2011-02-03).
But, following a social media campaign to determine when exactly in February to set this new public holiday (2012-05-11), Family Day was moved to the second Monday of February (2012-05-29), to avoid both British Columbia and neighboring Alberta being on holiday on the same date, and congesting British Columbia's ski resorts (a very popular destination for Albertans on Family Day).
The Family Day BC public holiday was thus observed on the second Monday of February for a few years (2015-05-30, 2014-01-16 and 2013-06-05). But, a petition launched in 2015 caused the BC Government to change the date of the annual Family Day non-working public holiday back to the third Monday in February (2018-02-09), effective in 2019 (2018-05-11).
