The president of Ecuador's Committee of Emergency Operations (COE), Juan Zapata, has announced that, after consultations with the Minister of Health, Camilo Salinas, the government of Ecuador had decided to maintain the upcoming April 30 public holiday being observed for the 2021 Labour Day.
The aforementioned announcement follows the similar one made last spring, by Ecuador's Minister of Tourism, Rosi Prado de Holguín, that the previously-announced public holiday of May 25, would remain unchanged, despite the Covid19 pandemic (2020-05-20).
Earlier this year (2021-02-02), the COE had similarly announced that the then upcoming Carnival public holidays would take place in Ecuador from February 13 to February 16, 2021 ("Este asueto se llevará a cabo del 13 al 16 de febrero y no será cancelado").
COE president Juan Zapata justified the maintaining of the April 30 public holiday as being part of existing legislation ("On Friday there will be effectively no activities because we cannot suspend a holiday, it is in the Holiday Law").
April 30, 2021, had been declared a public holiday on account of Labour Day in the Suplemento Registro Oficial No.906 (2016-12-21, 2016-12-13, 2016-10-16), which amended the 2003 "Ley Orgánica de Servicio Civil y Carrera Administrativa y de Unificación y Homologación de las Remuneraciones del Sector Público" (2003-12-04), by virtue of which most Ecuadorean public holidays' day off are moved to the nearest weekend, as well as a few tweaks that Ecuadorean President, Lenín Moreno Garcés, had added since his assumption of power (2019-04-29, 2019-04-25, 2017-03-29, 2018-04-26).
