The Minister of Tourism of Honduras, Nicole Marrder, has announced that the government of Honduras was considering a request by the Honduran private sector that Thursday and Friday, September 16-17, 2021, be declared as bicentennial public holidays and create a 5-day Independence bicentennial public holiday.

According to Minister Marrder's announcement, "A request has been received from the private company and we are evaluating it. If it occurs, it would be an important boost for the recovery of tourism". she further added that "What they have asked us is to extend the holiday of September 15 by making a bridge to the weekend, September 16 and 17, for the celebration of the Bicentennial (200 years of independence).".

Earlier this year, the Government of Honduras gave serious consideration to postponing the then upcoming 2021 Easter week public holidays to the end of 2021 (2021-03-26, 2021-02-15 and 2021-02-15).

Last year, after many bumps in the road, the Honduran government postponed the 2020 Semana Morazánica public holidays (2020-12-17, 2020-11-21, 2020-11-04, 2020-11-02, 2020-09-17, 2020-09-12 and 2020-09-10).

For 2021, a representative of the Medical College of Honduras has already called for the Semana Morazánica to be broken-up into its 3 independent public holidays, as was the case before they were amalgamated in 2014 and 2016 (2015-08-22, 2015-12-12, 2014-10-27, 2014-10-02, 2014-09-10 and 2014-09-05).
