Jamaica Declares December 27 Public Holiday

Source: Jamaica Information Service (JIS)
Posted: Tuesday, December 14, 2021

Jamaica's Ministry of Labour and Social Security has announced that Monday, December 27, 2021, would be observed as a one-off public holiday in Jamaica ("the Minister of Labour and Social Security, by virtue of his powers under Section 7 of the Holidays (Public General) Act, has appointed Monday, December 27, 2021 as a Public General Holiday.").

As per the Holidays (Public General) Act (1997-07-04, 1996-08-30 and 1996-02-24), as confirmed in the list of 2021 Jamaican public holidays (2017-05-06), only public holidays falling on a Sunday give rise to a day in lieu public holiday on the following Monday,

This rule has has be re-confirmed many times over the years (2020-07-15, 2016-12-16, 2016-07-28, 2015-12-22, 2015-07-21).

There is, however, a precedent for the declaration of Monday, December 27, as a public holiday in Jamaica. A decade ago, Monday, December 27, 2010, was also declared a one-off public holiday in Jamaica (2010-12-24)..
