The Presidency and Public Administration Commission of Spain's autonomous region of Melilla, has approved the list of 2022 regional public holidays in Melilla (calendario laboral 2022 de Melilla).
In 2022, the March 19 annual public holiday of Melilla will be compensated, once again (2020-10-02, 2019-10-04, 2018-09-29, 2017-10-08, 2016-10-04, 2015-09-17, 2014-09-27, 2013-10-05 and 2012-10-10) by the inclusion of a public holiday for the Feast of Sacrifice (Pascua del Sacrificio) Muslim public holiday, which has been set to the unexpected date July 11, 2022, contrary to was done in neighboring Ceuta (2019-09-27), where to 2022 public holiday for the Pascua del Sacrificio is expected to be declared on July 9, 2022.
In addition, to make way for the first time observance of a public holiday for the Eid al-Fitr, on May 3, 2022, the Day of the Statute of Autonomy of Melilla will not be observed as a public holiday in 2022.
Questioned on the non-observance of the city's anniversary as a public holiday in 2022, the first vice president of the Autonomous City, Gloria Rojas, stated that, for the inclusion of the Eid al-Fitr (end of Ramadan) as an official holiday in the 2022 calendar, none of the previous festivities have been eliminated, but that the local government "has played with the possibility of not moving to Monday the holidays that fall on Sunday" (namely March 13 and May 1st, in 2022).
