The executive of Spain's Basque autonomous region (País Vasco) has announced its annual calendar of official regional public holidays and bank holidays for the upcoming calendar year 2022 ("decreto de calendario laboral"), including a one-off public holiday on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the conclusion of the first round the world sailing by Getaria navigator Juan Sebastian Elkano.
After appearing in the list of Basque public holidays for 3 consecutive years (2020-05-05, 2019-04-01 and 2018-04-04), the March 19, San José, public holiday will not be included in Spain's Basque autonomous region public holidays in 2022, as had been the case before that (2017-04-26, 2016-05-11 and 2016-04-19).
The novelty, for 2022, will be the observance of a one-off public holiday on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, which has been baptized as Elkano Day, as approved by the Lakua Government Council, at the proposal of the Minister of Labor and Employment, Idoia Mendia. This one-off public holiday will replace Christmas Day which falls on a Sunday in 2022.
Elkano Day will commemorate the 500th anniversary of the first trip around the world led by the Getaria sailor, Juan Sebastián Elkano.
