The government of Portugal has canceled the upcoming traditional day off for Carnival, on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, "because the country is in lockdown".

Traditionally, Carnival is an annual optional public holiday for Portugal's public sector, as reconfirmed ("A tolerância de ponto que Governo e a administração pública a nível local [podem ou não dar] é suficiente para valorizar esta festividade"), following the reintroduction of 4 annual non-working public holidays in Portugal (2016-03-19, 2016-01-08 and 2012-08-01).

Over the years, the Greens have campaigned to make Carnival a full public holiday in Portugal, but they were usually blocked by their government partners, the Socialists (2020-02-29, 2017-01-19, 2017-01-12 and 2017-01-02).
