The Deputy Premier of Australia's state of Queensland, Steven Miles, has announced that the Royal Queensland Show public holiday, which had been gazetted for next Wednesday, August 11, 2021, has been canceled due to a worsening Covid-19 outbreak in the State of Queensland ("It will be rescheduled to some time later in the year").
Today's announcement of the cancellation of the Ekka public holiday amends the list of 2021 Queensland public holidays, as announced at the end of 2019 (2019-11-30).
Last year's Royal Queensland Show was also moved, though only from Wednesday, August 12, 2020, to Friday, August 14, 2020, to adjoin the subsequent weekend (2020-05-21), thus amending the list of 2020 public holidays in the state of Queensland, as announced a year and a half before that (2018-12-06).
The creation of an Ekka long weekend, as announced by Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk ("People's Day will become People's Long Weekend and we do this with the support of the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland") was a success leading some to suggest that the change could become permanent (2019-11-30).
But that suggestion was ruled-out by Premier Palaszczuk who re-iterated that the move of the 2020 People's Day public holiday would be a one-off move (2020-08-12).
