Senegal Rules-Out August 16 Public Holiday

Senegal's ministre du Travail, du Dialogue social et des Relations avec les institutions, Samba Sy, has announced that Monday, August 16, 2021, the day after the upcoming Assumption public holiday of Sénégal, would not be a day in lieu public holiday ("Le lundi 16 août suivant la fête légale du 15 août n’est pas jour férié").

In his announcement, the Minister recalls the terms of the "loi n° 74-52 du 04 novembre 1974 relative à la fête nationale et aux fêtes légales" which clearly specifies that only 2 public holidays falling on a Sunday give rise to a day in lieu public holiday "quand la Korité et la Tabaski tombent un dimanche, le lundi suivant est férié".

On some occasions (2018-10-25), a Monday, day in lieu public holiday was given when a Senegalese public holiday fell on a Sunday, but this remains the exception, and the government of Sénégal often has to issue communiqués denying the declaration of a day in lieu public holiday (2020-10-30 and 2020-08-30).
