Guyana's Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, has signed the Gazette Notification 112/2022/801 (Notification made under the Public Holidays Act CAP 19:07) declaring Thursday, May 5, 2022, as a public holiday in Guyana, on account of Arrival Day.
The aforementioned Gazette Notification is in line with the annual list of Guyanese bank holidays and public holidays in Guyana for the calendar year 2022 as released by the government of Guyana, late last year (2021-11-22).
The origin of Arrival Day stems from May 5, 1838, the date when the largest group of immigrants came to Guyana as Indentured laborers.
Arrival Day was first observed as an annual public holiday in Guyana in 2005 (2005-05-04), following the recommendation of the Guyana National Assembly's Special Select Committee on the Review of Public Holidays (2004-04-29), a review process that had been initiated in Parliament 2 years before (2003-04-11 and 2004-03-23).
