The States of Jersey (the government of Jersey) has lodged with the Greffe the "Public Holidays and Bank Holidays (Amendment No. 4) (Jersey) Act 202-" which is to enshrine into law the recent announcement of a long weekend for the upcoming Queen's Platinum Jubilee, from June 2--5, 2022.

Today's Gazetted publication by the States of Jersey had been lodged with the Greffe, earlier this year (2022-01-17), to officialize the updated list of official Jersey non-working public holidays and bank holidays in Jersey for the calendar year 2022, as released by the States of Jersey last autumn (2021-10-29 and 2021-08-06).

The "Public Holidays and Bank Holidays (Amendment No. 4) (Jersey) Act 2022" states as its object the following "This Act is proposed following consultation with the Bailiff’s Chambers and the Council of Ministers, to mark the Platinum Jubilee with a special 4-day bank holiday weekend. This mirrors the dates proposed in both the United Kingdom and Guernsey and, if approved, would move the end of May bank holiday (Monday 30th May) to Thursday 2nd June with an additional bank holiday arranged on Friday 3rd June.".

Specifically, its 2 articles state that "despite paragraph 5(3) of Part 1, Thursday 2nd June is to be observed as a public holiday instead of the last Monday in May" and that "Friday 3rd June is to be observed as a public holiday".

As mentioned when we reported that the "Public Holidays and Bank Holidays (Amendment No. 4) (Jersey) Act 2022" had been lodged, the Act will come into force 7 days after publication, though it did specify that the earliest date for debate would be March 1st, 2022 (2022-01-17).

Late in 2020 (2020-11-12), the UK's culture secretary, Oliver Dowden, had announced that an extra Platinum Jubilee public holiday would be declared on Friday, June 3, 2022, to mark Queen Elizabeth's 70th anniversary on the throne.

Since then, a few Commonwealth states and Crown Posessions have joined the UK in declaring a 3-day or 4-day Platinum Jubilee period of public holidays (2022-02-28, 2022-01-17, 2021-12-28, 2021-12-22, 2021-11-30, 2021-11-05, 2021-10-29, 2021-10-21, 2021-08-28, 2021-08-06 and 2021-07-05).
