The States of Jersey (the government of Jersey) has lodged with the Greffe the "Public Holidays and Bank Holidays (Amendment No. 4) (Jersey) Act 202-" which is to enshrine into law the recent announcement of a long weekend for the upcoming Queen's Platinum Jubilee, from June 2--5, 2022.
Last autumn, the States of Jersey released an updated list of official Jersey non-working public holidays and bank holidays in Jersey for the calendar year 2022 (2021-10-29).
That amended list of 2022 Jersey bank and public holidays included an additional bank holiday on Friday, June 3, 2022, on account of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, as well as the moving of the annual Spring Holiday to June 2, as compared to the late May date initially announced (2021-08-06).
The "Public Holidays and Bank Holidays (Amendment No. 4) (Jersey) Act 202-" begins with the preamble "This year marks 70 years since the ascension of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to the throne and the first occasion on which a British monarch has reached this historic milestone.".
The Act then states its object as "This Act is proposed following consultation with the Bailiff’s Chambers and the Council of Ministers, to mark the Platinum Jubilee with a special 4-day bank holiday weekend. This mirrors the dates proposed in both the United Kingdom and Guernsey and, if approved, would move the end of May bank holiday (Monday 30th May) to Thursday 2nd June with an additional bank holiday arranged on Friday 3rd June.".
The Act, if passed, would come into force 7 days after it is made, though it does specify that the earliest date for debate is March 1st, 2022.
Recall that, late in 2020 (2020-11-12), the UK's culture secretary, Oliver Dowden, announced that an extra Platinum Jubilee public holiday would be declared on Friday, June 3, 2022, to mark Queen Elizabeth's 70th anniversary on the throne, which, combined with a shift of the 2022 spring bank holiday to Thursday, June 2, 2022, would create a 4-day period of bank holidays.
