Philippines Declare May 9 Electoral Public Holiday

Philippines President, Rodrigo Duterte, has signed Proclamation No. 1357 declaring Monday, May 9, 2022, as a special non-working holiday in the Philippines, "to enable the people to properly exercise their right to vote".

The salient details of Proclamation No. 1357 read as follows: "Now, therefore, I, Rodrigo Roa Duterte, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare Monday, 09 May 2022, a special (non-working) holiday throughout the country for the National and Local Elections".

Recall that, late last month, the Philippines Commission on Elections (Comelec) issued Resolution No. 10784 asking President Rodrigo Duterte to declare Monday, May 9, 2022, as a public holiday to give voters the chance to participate in the national and local polls being held on that date (2022-04-28).

Public holidays were declared on the occasion of the past elections (2016-04-27, 2013-04-23, 2010-03-18, 2007-04-25 and 2004-05-06), and the aforementioned declaration of Monday, May 9, 2022, as an additional special public non-working holiday thus amends the list of 2022 public holidays in the Philippines, as released last autumn, in Proclamation No.1236, s.2021 (2021-10-29).
