The Romanian Senate has published the text of the legislative initiative introduced by USR deputy, Marian Lazăr, and which would declare December 24 as a new annual public holiday in Romania.

Last month, we had reported on Romanian USR deputy, Marian Lazăr, introducing a bill to the Romanian Senate which inserts a new indent ("December 24 - Christmas Eve") in paragraph (1) of Article 139 of Law no. 53/2003, the Romanian Labor Code, as republished in the Official Gazette of Romania, Part I, no. 345 of May 18, 2011.

As per the explanatory notes that accompanied the aforementioned bill, "We mention in this category, among other states: Denmark, Sweden, Hungary, Liechtenstein. It is important to mention that in Romania, the Labor Code stipulates that legal holidays in which a number of 15 days are not worked, of which two of these days, respectively the first day of Easter and the first day of Pentecost, are always celebrated in one day. on Sunday. This number of public holidays is lower than in other Member States of the European Union, among which we mention: Bulgaria; Lithuania, Germany (including federal holidays): Spain (including regional holidays). Moreover, compared to other states, the national legislation does not allow the compensation of the legal holidays provided in art. 139 paragraph (l) of the Labor Code, which occur during the weekend, with non-working days off.".

Recent changes to the list of annual non-working public holidays in Romania, via amendments to article 139 of the Labor Code, include Good Friday (2018-03-12, 2018-02-25), 2018-02-28, 2017-12-11), International Children's Day on June 1st (2016-11-17, 2016-10-18, 2016-09-15, 2016-06-13 and 2016-04-08), and the commemoration of the reunification of Wallachia and Moldavia on January 24 (2016-10-07 and 2016-09-06).

The list of Romanian public holidays for 2022 (2021-10-10) and 2023 (2022-01-07) have already been announced.
