Uganda Will Declare A Public Holiday For Speaker Oulanyah

The Government of Uganda, has confirmed that the date of the upcoming funeral of Speaker Jacob Oulanyah will be designated as a one-off public holiday in Uganda, as per the terms of the Parliamentary Pensions Act.

Section 16 of Part D of the aforementioned act states that "A public holiday shall be declared on the day of burial of a person who dies while holding the office of Speaker or Deputy.".

Speaker Oulanyah, who died over the weekend in Seattle, is the first speaker of parliament in Uganda to die in office. Former Speakers James Wapakhabulo and Francis Ayume died after having left office.

The date of Speaker Oulanyah's funeral has yet to be announced.
