The Minister for Presidency of Uganda, Milly Babalanda, has announced that former speaker of parliament, Jacob Oulanyah, would be buried on Friday, April 8, 2022, and confirmed that that date would will be observed as a public holiday in Uganda.

When Speaker Oulanyah died, earlier this month (2022-03-21), the Government of Uganda, confirmed that the date of his funeral would be declared a one-off public holiday in Uganda, as per the terms of the Parliamentary Pensions Act, which states that "A public holiday shall be declared on the day of burial of a person who dies while holding the office of Speaker or Deputy.", in Section 16 of Part D.

Speaker Oulanyah, is the first speaker of parliament in Uganda to die in office. Former Speakers James Wapakhabulo and Francis Ayume died after having left office.

Due to the delays in repatriating his body from the US, the date of Speaker Oulanyah's funeral, and of the related public holiday, had not been set until today.
