Governing Law: The law governing public holidays in Burkina Faso is la loi N°019-2000/AN portant institution de fêtes légales au Burkina Faso which replaced the 1992 Loi n° 09/92/ADP instituant les fêtes légales au Burkina Faso, which itself abrogated the earlier Zatu n° AN VII-004/FP/PRES du 21 septembre 1989 and the Ordonnance n° 92-0067/PRES du 21 novembre 1991. • August 4 and October 15 are mentioned in Article 2 of the aforementioned law of 2000, but they are only classified as commemorative dates (sont reconnus par l’Etat comme marquant des événements à caractère historique pouvant donner lieu à des cérémonies commémoratives) and the wording of Article 3 makes it obvious that only the holidays and dates mentioned in Article 1 are public holidays. The appearance of these 2 public holidays on some websites is probably due to the fact that they were indeed paid public holidays, but only from 1992 to 2000. • Weekend Public holidays: Some online sources claim that only 2 public holidays lead to a day in lieu public holiday on the Monday following a Sunday occurrence; May 1 and December 11. However, having read the 2000 law on public holidays, and searched the Journal Officiel du Burkina Faso for any subsequent amendment, it would seem that, in practice, the reality is a bit more subtle. • National Day: Note that the Haute-Volta (as Burkina Faso was then called) gained it independence on August 5, 1960.
