26 Sep 2008 (AKI Press-Bishkek) Kyrgyzstan's prime minister's press office has reported that the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic changed the date for the upcoming Orozo Ait (End of Ramadan) public holiday, from the previously scheduled date of October 2, to Wednesday, October 1st, 2008. • 25 Aug 2008 (China Daily) Following last week-end's plane crash in which 65 people died, Kyrgyzstan's President, Kurmanbek Bakiyev, ordered a day of national mourning for Tuesday, August 26. On that day, flags will fly at half mast on public buildings and shows, theaters and cinemas will close for the day as a mark of respect for the dead, but it will not be a public holiday. • 17 Mar 2008 (AKI Press) President Bakiev has signed the law making March 24 an annual public holiday, People's Revolution Day, which had finally been voted by parliament on March 13. That same law had been rejected in 2006, and the holiday had to be declared by presidential decree in 2007. • 11 Mar 2008 (Central Asian News) The Parliament of Kyrgyzstan is about to vote to confirm the recently added March 24 National Revolution Day public holiday. • 27 Dec 2007 (AKI Press) The government of Kyrgyzstan has declared as non-working days (one-off bridge public holidays) the days of January 2-3-4, 2008, meaning that Kyrgyzstan will be on holidays from Tuesday, January 1, 2008, to Monday, January 7, 2008, from New Year's Day to Orthodox Christmas, inclusively. • 16 Mar 2007 (AKI Press) The draft law making March 24th an annual public holiday having been rejected by Kyrgyzstan parliament last year, President Bakiev issued an executive decree making March 24, 2007, a public holiday. • 04 Apr 2006 (Turkish Weekly) Following President Kurmanbek Bakiev's declaration of Macrh 24 as a new "Tulip Revolution" public holiday, lawmakers in Kyrgyzstan have voted against the proposal, claiming that an "objective assessment" of that popular uprising is needed before declaring the day a national holiday. • 10 Dec 2001 (CNN-Bishkek) Kyrgyzstan's parliament has voted to reinstate the November 7 annual anniversary of Russia's 1917 Bolshevik revolution as a public holiday. A majority of the 60 deputies voted for the bill, saying they be grateful to the Bolsheviks for ending the "genocide of the Kyrgyz nation" conducted by tsarist Russia after the popular uprising in 1916. Governing Law: Official public holidays in Kyrgyztan are regulated by the Article 155 of the 2004 Labour Code of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan which replaced the 1997 consolidated Labour Code. Section 166 of the 1997 Labour code was amended in 2002 by the Act No. 2 of 5 January 2002 to amend and supplement the Labour Code (Text No. 7) and the Act No. 3 of 8 January 2002 to supplement the Labour Code (Text No. 8) which are both still in effect. • Weekend Public Holidays are regulated by paragraph 2 of article 115 of the 2004 Labour Code. • Bridge Public Holidays: paragraph 3 of article 115 of the 2004 Labour Code specifies that The government of the Kyrgyz Republic may transfer weekends [to] other days for [the] rational use of weekends and non-working holidays. • November 7th is the public holiday that marks the day of the Great October Revolution back in 1917 when the tsarist regime in Russian Empire was replaced by the Bolsheviks. • Homeland Defenders' Day (February 23) is still listed in many online sources as a public holiday in Kyrgyzstan, but it was removed from the list of official public holidays in 2004. • Other Sources of Information For information not covered here, see the following specialized websites: National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (maps, demographic and economic statistics), Copp Clark (financial markets' trading hours, settlement holidays and currency non-clearing days), and the IFES Election Guide (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and past voter participation).

Religious Holidays : Public holidays in Kyrgyzstan that are based on certain religious calendars may be subject to local variations due to differing interpretations between different religious authorities, or to seemingly arbitrary changes in the date a holiday is celebrated because it conflicts with another holiday that is based on another calendar, or because the day of the holiday is deemed inauspicious (bad luck). Muslim Holidays : Muslim bank holidays, legal holidays and public holidays for Kyrgyzstan were evaluated using the Umm al-Qura Calendar of Saudi Arabia which is used in Saudi Arabia and in most of the Persian Gulf States. Holidays may occur a day later in countries outside the Gulf region. The sunrises, sunsets, moon phases, moonrises and moonsets used in these calculations are based on the location of Mecca (latitude 21.42°N, longitude, 39.82°E, GMT+3 hours, no summer time rules).
