19 May 2010 (Macedonian Information Centre-Skopje) The Organization of Employers of the Republic of Macedonia is calling on the government of Macedonia to reduce the number of public holidays and legally mandated ethnic non-working days. • 29 Mar 2010 (Macedonian Information Agency-MIA) Macedonia's Ministry of Labour and Social Policy has announced that the upcoming second day of Easter (Monday, April 5, 2010) will be a non-working public holiday for all citizens in the Republic of Macedonia. • 28 Mar 2010 (Macedonian Information Agency-MIA) The government of Macedonia has declared next Tuesday, March 30, 2010, as the 5th Tree-Planting national non-working public holiday. • 24 Nov 2009 (IDIVIDI-Skopje) Macedonia's Ministry of Labour and Social Policy has announced that the upcoming Kurban Bairam (Feast of Sacrifice) public holiday would be observed on Friday, November 27, 2009. • 12 Nov 2009 (Macedonian Information Agency-MIA) The government of Macedonia has declared tomorrow, Friday, November 13, 2009, as a one-off public holiday to enable citizens to participate in that day's National Tree-Planting Campaign. • 26 Oct 2009 (Ministry of Labour and Social Policy of the Republic of Macedonia-Skopje) Macedonia's Ministry of Labour and Social Policy has released the official list of 2010 public holidays in Macedonia. • 13 Aug 2009 (Pakistan Daily-Lahore) The Islamic Sheikdom of Macedonia has announced that the first day of the month of Ramadan would be Friday, August 21, 2009, in conjunction with Bosnia, Kosovo, and Albania. • 28 Jul 2009 (Macedonian Information Agency-MIA) Earlier today, Macedonia's Ministry of Labor and Social Policy issued a a press release announcing that Monday, August 3, 2009, would be a non-working public holiday for all citizens of Macedonia. • 02 Jan 2009 (FOCUS Information Agency-Skopje) Erdogan Sarac, the leader of the Movement for National Unification of Turks in Macedonia, is petitioning the Macedonian government for it to change the date of the public holiday accorded to the ethnic Turkish minority. • 18 Nov 2008 (Idividi-Skopje) The second edition of the "Tree Day - Plant Your Future" tree-planting national marathon will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, November 19, 2008, which will be a non-working public holiday throughout Macedonia to encourage participation. • More News Updates For the full version of the summarized news items above, and older news items not displayed above, go to the Macedonia public holidays news and updates page, or worldwide public holidays news and updates page, or subscribe to one of our free email newsletters.

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Macedonia are regulated by the aptly named Law on holidays in Republic of Macedonia (2007), by which Macedonia changed several of its holidays. There are some new national holidays and many holidays for members of specific religions. This schedule lists the national holidays as well as some of the main observances from different relligious groups. Although the changes were initially slated for 2008, many were implemented in the second half of 2007. • Weekend Public Holidays: When a Macedonian holiday falls on a weekend day, the Government of Macedonia usually issues a proclamation a few days before the holiday informing the public that a different day will be the observed holiday. • Orthodox New Year is not a public holiday although it is celebratedby some. • Religious and Ethnic Holidays: The following are Government-designated religious and ethnic community holidays that are only for those of specific faiths or ethnic communities. In our listing we have included holidays reseved for those of Orthodox faith (65% of the population), Muslim faith (33% of the population), and of Albanian ethnicity (25% of the population). • Public holidays afforded to other minorities (none amounting to more than 4% of the population) are: • January 27 - Saint Sava (Serbian community) • April 8 - International Day of the Roma (Roma community) • Easter Monday (Catholics) • May 23 - National Day of the Vlachs (Vlach community) • Yom Kippur, first day of Yom Kippur (Jewish faith) • November 1 - All Saints Holiday (Catholic faith) • December 21 - Day of the Turkish Language (Turkish community). • Bill on Amending the Law on State Holidays: A law implementing a full revision of the national public holidays in Macedonia was begun in January 2007 and the bill finally passed on February 8. • Weekend Public Holidays: Sometimes when a Macedonian public holiday falls on a weekend day, the Government of the Republic of Macedonia makes a proclamation, a few days before the public holiday, to inform the general public that a different day will be the "observed" public holiday. • Ilinden Day is the national day of Macedonia and commemorates Uprising Day (August 2, 1903), also known as Saint Elijah's Day. • SS. Cyril and Methodius Day was celebrated for the first time in 2007, on Thursday, May 24. •  Yom Kippur is a Macedonian public holiday for those of Jewish faith only and Kurban Bajram is a holidays for those of Moslem faith only. • Orthodox New Year is not an official public holiday but is nevertheless widely celebrated. • Golema Bogorodica (Dormition of the Holy Mother of God) is Orthodox Assumption. • Macedonia International Codes MK and MKD (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .mk (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Macedonia information and news: National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia (Macedonia central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Macedonia maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Macedonia), and Wikipedia (includes Macedonia commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).

Observance : Any entry in the Observance column indicates that, in Macedonia, the holiday may be regional or non-official or limited to certain religious and/or linguistic groups, or begin at a time other than midnight. Note that religious holidays are included only if they are national public holidays, or if the national labour code has specific holiday allowances for employees of specific religions. Religious Holidays : Public holidays in Macedonia that are based on certain religious calendars may be subject to local variations due to differing interpretations between different religious authorities, or to seemingly arbitrary changes in the date a holiday is celebrated because it conflicts with another holiday that is based on another calendar, or because the day of the holiday is deemed inauspicious (bad luck). Muslim Holidays : Muslim bank holidays, legal holidays and public holidays for Macedonia were evaluated using the Umm al-Qura Calendar of Saudi Arabia which is used in Saudi Arabia and in most of the Persian Gulf States. Holidays may occur a day later in countries outside the Gulf region. The sunrises, sunsets, moon phases, moonrises and moonsets used in these calculations are based on the location of Mecca (latitude 21.42°N, longitude, 39.82°E, GMT+3 hours, no summer time rules).
