08 Jan 2010 (RT-Kiev) Ukraine's President, Viktor Yushchenko, has signed a decree that establishes a holiday dedicated to Ukrainian soldiers who fought on the side of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, against Russia, during WWI. • 17 Dec 2009 (National Bank of Ukraine-Kiev) Ukraine's Central Bank, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), has declared January 1-3 and January 7-10, 2010, as periods of bank holidays. • 27 Nov 2009 (Interfax-Kiev) The Cabinet of Ministers of the Ukraine has passed a resolution specifying the official list of 2010 public holidays. • 18 Nov 2009 (National News Agency of Ukraine-Kyiv) The government of the Ukraine has declared the first day of Eid al-Adha, which this year falls on November 27, a non-business day (aka. public holiday), for Crimean Muslims. • 18 Sep 2009 (National News Agency of Ukraine-Kyiv) The Ukraine government has declared the first day of the upcoming Muslim holiday of Uraza Bairam (End of Ramadan), on Sunday, September 20, 2009, a non-business day (aka. public holiday). • 20 Dec 2008 (National Bank of Ukraine-Kiev) Ukraine's central bank, the National Bank of the Ukraine (NBU), has announced a bank holiday from January 1-3, 2009. Governing Law: Official public holidays in the Ukraine are regulated by the Labour Code, which has not really been overhauled since Soviet times. The list of 10 public holidays is specified in Appendix A of the Labour code. • Eves of Public Holidays: the Labour code stipulates that the working day immediately before a public holiday is one hour less than usual. • Weekend Public Holidays: When public holidays fall on Saturday or Sunday, it is customary for the following Monday to be an official public holiday. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine may also transfer to the Monday preceding or Friday following the public holiday if it falls on the corresponding Tuesday or Thursday. • In addition bridge holidays are often given between a holiday and the nearest weekend, but are also often compensated by having a nearby Saturday declared to be a normal working day. Religious Holidays : Public holidays in Ukraine that are based on certain religious calendars may be subject to local variations due to differing interpretations between different religious authorities, or to seemingly arbitrary changes in the date a holiday is celebrated because it conflicts with another holiday that is based on another calendar, or because the day of the holiday is deemed inauspicious (bad luck). Muslim Holidays : Muslim bank holidays, legal holidays and public holidays for Ukraine were evaluated using the Umm al-Qura Calendar of Saudi Arabia which is used in Saudi Arabia and in most of the Persian Gulf States. Holidays may occur a day later in countries outside the Gulf region. The sunrises, sunsets, moon phases, moonrises and moonsets used in these calculations are based on the location of Mecca (latitude 21.42°N, longitude, 39.82°E, GMT+3 hours, no summer time rules).
