Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Burundi are regulated by the Décret n°100/182 du 17 juillet 2006 fixant la liste et le régime des jours fériés, within the framework of the Code du Travail du Burundi (Décret loi n°1-037 du 07 juillet 93).  Eid al Fitr: Burundi celebrated Eid al Fitr for the first time in 2005 when a public holiday was granted to redress an injustice against the minority Muslim community, who was initially thought only 1% of the population, but was later declared by Muslim groups who had conducted a census, to be between 8% to 10% .  Burundi International Codes BI and BDI (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .bi (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Burundi information and news: ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Burundi maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Burundi), and Wikipedia (includes Burundi commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
