Background Information

Governing Law: Public holidays in the Central African Republic are regulated by the Décret no 96-156 du 14 mai 1996 portant organisation du ministère de la Fonction publique, de l'Emploi, de la Sécurité sociale et de la Formation professionnelle et fixant les attributions du ministre which replaced the earlier Décret no 69-220 du 15 juillet 1969 fixant les attributions du ministre de la Fonction publique, du Travail et des Affaires sociales, itself replacing the Loi 62-315 fixant les fêtes légales en République Centrafricaine, du 21 mai 1962, the Loi 60-187 fixant les fêtes légales en République Centrafricaine, du 23 janvier 1961, and the Loi 60-167 déclarant fête nationale de 1er décembre de chaque année, du 12 décembre 1960.  Islamic Holidays: The Islamic holidays of Tabaski (Feast of Sacrifice) and Korité (End of Ramadan) are not official days off, however, with 15% of the population being Muslim, they are celebrated.  March 15: Some sources mention a March 15 public holiday, Prise de pouvoir du président François BOZIZE (Sursaut national), but there is no official confirmation to be found anywhere.  Central African Republic International Codes CF and CAF (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .cf (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Central African Republic information and news: Bank of Central African States (Central African Republic central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Central African Republic maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Central African Republic), and Wikipedia (includes Central African Republic commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).

**

Religious Holidays : Public holidays in Central African Republic that are based on certain religious calendars may be subject to local variations due to differing interpretations between different religious authorities, or to seemingly arbitrary changes in the date a holiday is celebrated because it conflicts with another holiday that is based on another calendar, or because the day of the holiday is deemed inauspicious (bad luck). To find out more about these uncertainties, see the footnote below, if any, for each specific religion.

Muslim Holidays : Muslim bank holidays, legal holidays and public holidays for Central African Republic were evaluated using the Umm al-Qura Calendar of Saudi Arabia which is used in Saudi Arabia and in most of the Persian Gulf States. Holidays may occur a day later in countries outside the Gulf region. The sunrises, sunsets, moon phases, moonrises and moonsets used in these calculations are based on the location of Mecca (latitude 21.42°N, longitude, 39.82°E, GMT+3 hours, no summer time rules). For more details on Muslim holidays, see Muslim Calendar Holidays. For Salat (prayer times) calculations, see our Freeware page.
