Background Information |
|
Governing Law: Official public holidays in Laos are regulated by the 1994 Labour Code (Decree No. 24/PR of the President of the Republic, dated 21 April 1994 promulgating Act No. 002/NA of 14 March 1994 concerning labour), which stipulates, in section 28, that the actual list of public holidays is given annually by the government.
Festivals: Although many online sources list 15 or more public holidays for Laos (including The Day of Europe on some websites), there are actually very few official public holidays. Some non-official, but widely observed, holidays are listed here with observance restrictions, as some businesses might be closed on these days.
Lao Issara (Day of Free Laos) on August 13 seems to have been replaced by Constitution Day (August 15) sometime in 2004-2005, but neither of these dates is an official public holiday in Laos nowadays.
Liberation Day (from French) also seems to have been removed from the official list of Laos public holidays around that time.
Laos International Codes LA and LAO (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .la (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Laos information and news: ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Laos maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Laos), and Wikipedia (includes Laos commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays). |
