Background Information

Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example). In fact, Article 7 of Law 1400/1983 specifically prohibits the transfer of public holidays when they fall on a Sunday.  Greek law provides for both mandatory and discretionary public holidays. These are all subject to a decision by the Minister for Labour. Apart from May 1 (added as a national public holiday in 1968, through Act No. 380, to declare 1 May to be a compulsory public holidays), local saints' days may also be observed as additional public holidays, especially the name-day of the patron saint of certain occupations or industries.  Greece International Codes GR and GRC (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .gr (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Greece information and news: Bank of Greece (Greece central bank), UnitedHealthcare Global (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Greece maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Greece), and Wikipedia (includes Greece commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
