Recent News and Updates

10 Sep 2008 (BBC) Zambia's acting President, Rupiah Banda, has announced that Zambia would hold an election on 30 October to choose a successor to President Levy Mwanawasa, who died last month, and whose funeral, on September 3rd, was a public holiday in Zambia. Based on past decisions we expect the date of these upcoming presidential elections to also be declared a public holiday.  26 Aug 2008 (The Earth Times) Cabinet Secretary, Joshua Kanganja, announced that acting Zambian president, Rupiah Banda, had declared a public holiday on Wednesday, September 3, 2008, the day on which the late President Levy Mwanawasa is to be interred, and which would have been his 60th birthday. In addition, President Banda signed a statutory instrument into law Monday making this date an annual public holiday, as a symbol of the significance of Mwanawasa's immense contributions to Zambia.  24 Aug 2008 (Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation-ZNBC) The president of the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), Leonard Hikaumba, has called on the Government of Zambia to declare a one-off national non-working public holiday on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008, on the day of the funeral of President Levy Mwanawasa.  23 Jun 2008 (Zambia Daily Mail) Zambia's President, Dr Mwanawasa, speaking ahead of the Africa Public Service Day, which falls today, regretted that commemoration of the day had not been brought to his government’s attention in good time, otherwise it could have been declared a public holiday, and went on to say that This is an important day which can be observed as a public holiday in future.  07 Mar 2007 (ZNBC) The Zambian cabinet decided to add International Women's Day to the list of Zambia's public holidays, beginning in 2008.  25 Feb 2004 (Times of Zambia-Lusaka) Finance Minister, Ng'andu Magande, told parliament that the Zambian government has temporarily suspended all official functions to commemorate public holidays as a cost-saving measure except for Independence Day.  More News Updates For up-to-the-minute news about public holidays trends and changes, visit our public holidays news and updates pages, or subscribe to one of our free email newsletters.
