Background Information

Banks and the public sector will often close on the Friday before, or the Monday after, a weekend holiday. Some private sector companies may do the same on a case-by-case basis, but this is rare.  Optional Holidays are usually observed by banks and the public sector, but rarely by the private sector (except for Easter-related holidays in Quebec)  Remembrance Day (November 11) is not a General Holiday under Manitoba labour legislation, however most industries in Manitoba are not allowed to operate that day, with some specified exceptions.  Nova Scotia only recognizes 5 holidays officially, but admits to the concept of "days commonly recognized as holidays" and in our listing we have meshed the 2 lists.  New Brunswick has a complex set of rules determining the Christmas and Boxing Day days off, depending on the weekday on which Christmas falls on a given year.  Newfoundland: as the public sector (and Memorial University) are the largest employers in the Province of Newfoundland, we have included Newfoundland public hlidays observed by the public sector only).  Canada International Codes CA and CAN (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .ca (ICANN national top-level internet domain). Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Canada information and news: Bank of Canada (Canada central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Canada maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Canada), and Wikipedia (includes Canada commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
