30 Apr 2004 (Dagens Nyheter-Stockholm) The former Swedish EU commissionaire Anita Gradin is expected to suggest that the June 6 national day be made into a full-fledged public holiday, starting in 2005.
07 Jun 2002 (Svenska Dagbladet-Stockholm) Sweden's Parliament is to make June 6, Sweden's National Day into a full public holiday (as of 2002, Sweden's National Day is not a public holiday in Sweden). This change, however, is not likely to occur in 2003 or even 2004, as there is debate as to which other public holiday to cancel in exchange.

Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example).
Klämdagar are days "squeezed" between a public holiday and a weekend, for instance if the holiday falls on a Thursday or Tuesday. This is equivalent to bridge holidays in Europe (faire le pont in France or hacer puente in Spain) or sandwich days in South and Central America.
National Day was a public holiday for banks and civil servants only, until 2005, when it became a full-fledged holiday. In return, the holiday of Whit Monday is no longer recognized as a public holiday .
Ascension is officially only 1 day (always a Thursday), but often 2 are taken in practice (both the Thursday and Friday).
The eve of a holiday is as important as, or more so than, the holiday itself. Most Swedes have the day off, including civil servants, banks, public transport workers, hospitals, shops and media workers. Others have at least a half day. This applies especially to Midsummer's Eve, All Hallows' Eve and Christmas Eve.
Sami National Day, not an official public holiday, was set to be celebrated on February 6th, on the occasion of the 15th Sami conference in Helsinki in 1992. The Sami national day is common for all Sami, irrespective of where they live, whether in Sweden, Norway, Finland or Russia. The national day was celebrated for the first time in 1993 . |
