  • UAE Prophet's Birthday Public Holiday Still Not Announced
    Emirates News Agency (WAM)

Over this past weekend, many news outlets in the UAE announced that, as per the "UAE's astronomy centre", the month of Rabi Al Awwal would begin on August 25 meaning that "the date for the 12th day of Rabi Al Awwal, marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) will fall on Friday, September 5".

Setting the date of the Prophet's Birthday public holiday on September 5th would be a day later than other GCC countries and would represent a marked departure from past years.

In any event, no official announcement has yet been made, either by the UAE's Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), for private sector employees, or the Federal Authority For Government Human Resources, for the public sector.

Recall, however, that since January 1, 2022, the UAE observes a Saturday-Sunday weekend "to better align its economy with global markets" and that, as per the April 2024 Resolution No. 27, "With the exception of Eid Holidays, the Cabinet may by a resolution postpone any of the aforementioned public holidays in Article (1) of this Resolution to the beginning or end of the week".

  • Jordan Public Holiday For Prophet Mohammad's Birthday September 16
    Jordan News Agency Petra (Amman)

Earlier today, Jordanian Prime Minister, Jafar Hassan, announced that the upcoming public holiday for Prophet Mohammad's birthday (Mawlid al-Nabi) would be observed on Thursday, September 4, 2025, and that this suspension of work would apply to "all ministries, government departments, public institutions and bodies, public universities, municipalities, joint service councils the Greater Amman Municipality and government-owned companies".

As usual, the above may seem to indicate that the announcement does not apply to the private sector.

However, recall that, back in October 2020, the then spokesperson for the Jordanian Ministry of Labour, Mohammad al-Zyoud, had clarified that "all official and religious holidays in Jordan include both public and private sectors" adding that "According to article 59 of the Labour Law, which clarifies the mechanism for making the employer work on his weekly, religious or public holidays, official communications issued for this purpose include private sector institutions without mentioning them in the communications.". This clarification was reiterated by the Jordanian Ministry of Labour many times, since then, most recently in late May, June, and July 2024.

Note that a differential exists between the non-working public holidays in Morocco for the public sector, and the non-working public holidays in Morocco for the private sector.

Decree No. 2.00.166 of May 10, 2000 amending and supplementing Decree No. 2.77.169 of February 28, 1977 specifies that religious holidays give rise to 2 public holidays for administrations, businesses and the civil service.

On the other hand, Decree No. 2.04.426 stipulates that for private companies only one day of paid leave is provided. The employer is therefore not obliged to grant the second day, unless otherwise stipulated in a collective agreement. In practice, banks, as well as multinationals, grant two days of paid leave.

Monday, March 31st, 2025, was then canceled as a public holiday as per the vide notification No.28/67/2008-1-HR-I.

Then, the Haryana Government issued the vide notification No. 28/67/2008-1HR-I cancelling the April 30, 2025, public holiday for Akshaya Tritiya.

And, most recently, the vide Notification No. Elec-2025/IR-II/PSCE/Hol/ 17767 was issued declaring Sunday, June 29, 2025, as a public holiday on account of the General Election for the seat of President and Members of all the ward of Municipal Committee, Kalanwali, District Sirsa.
