Bermuda Public Holidays Amendments Passed

(Posted on Wednesday, December 22, 1999)

The final, official, text of the "Public Holidays Amendment Act 1999" bill has finally been released.

This follows weeks of wrangling between the government and the opposition, and between the Lower House of Parliament and the Senate (09-Dec-1999).

In the final version of the bill, the contentious issue of the renaming of the "Cup Match Day" public holiday was sidestepped by dubbing both days as "Cup Match" public holidays with the first named "Emancipation Day" and adding the mention which last two days and shall together be known as "Cup Match".

In all the commotion related to the renaming of the Cup Match public holiday, a more concrete change was often ignored, that of the date of the Queen's Birthday public holiday, which Section 3 of the "Public Holidays Amendment Act 1999" changes from "the third Monday in June" to "the Monday following the second Saturday in June".

The bill was tabled in the Bermuda House of Assembly, at the beginning of last month (05-Nov-1999).
