Tajikistan's President, Emomali Rahmonov, has issued a decree ordering a study of "traditional popular holidays, ceremonies and rituals".
The decree specifically refers to socially-divisive celebrations "which have a negative impact on the people's living standards", and it is not clear if the decree refers to commemorative dates or to the religious public holidays which have made their way into Tajikistan's official list of public holidays since the break-up of the USSR.
